Italy Student Visa in 2026: Requirements, Documents, and How the Process Works

In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in demand for student visas to Italy.
This growing interest is driven by the quality of Italian universities, tuition fees that are often more affordable than those in other European countries, and the opportunity to live legally in one of Europe's most sought-after study destinations.
In addition, many students choose Italy not only for its academic excellence but also as part of a long-term international mobility plan that may include future career opportunities and the chance to gain experience within the Schengen Area.
For nationals of countries that require a visa for long-term stays, such as Brazil, enrollment in courses lasting more than 90 days requires obtaining a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D) before traveling to Italy.
In this article, we explain who may apply for an Italian student visa, the legal requirements, the documents typically requested, and the rights granted to students after arriving in Italy.
What is the Italian Student Visa?
The Italian Student Visa is an authorization issued by Italian consulates that allows foreign nationals to enter Italy legally to attend courses lasting more than 90 days.
The visa may be issued for different types of educational programs, including:
- Bachelor's degree programs;
- Master's degree programs;
- PhD programs;
- University exchange programs;
- Specialization courses;
- Recognized vocational training programs;
- University or academic programs, where they qualify as study programs under the criteria established by the educational institution and the competent Italian authorities.
The educational institution must be legally recognized by the competent Italian authorities.
Why Is Demand for the Italian Student Visa Increasing?
Several factors have contributed to the growing interest in studying in Italy, including:
- Internationally recognized universities;
- An increasing number of degree programs taught entirely in English;
- Tuition costs that are often lower than those charged in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia;
- The possibility of working legally while studying;
- Italy's strategic location within the Schengen Area;
- Future opportunities to remain legally in Italy through immigration categories compatible with employment or research.
For these reasons, Italy has established itself as one of the leading European destinations for international students seeking to combine high-quality education with international experience.
Who Can Apply for a Student Visa?
A student visa may be requested by individuals who have been admitted to or enrolled in an eligible Italian educational institution.
The admission or enrollment letter issued by the institution is one of the key documents in the application process.
Without prior admission, there is no legal basis for the issuance of a student visa.
What Are the Main Requirements?
Although the required documentation may vary depending on the Italian Consulate responsible for the application, applicants are generally required to provide the following:
Proof of Admission
An official admission or enrollment letter issued by the Italian educational institution.
Proof of Financial Means
Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves throughout their stay in Italy.
Financial resources must comply with the requirements in force and with the criteria established by the competent Italian Consulate, which may vary depending on the course, its duration, and the applicable regulations.
Accommodation
Applicants must demonstrate where they will be staying during their time in Italy.
Accepted documents may include:
- A rental agreement;
- A declaration of accommodation;
- University housing confirmation;
- Accommodation reservations, where accepted by the competent Consulate.
Health Insurance
Applicants must hold valid health insurance covering the initial period of their stay in Italy.
Valid Passport
The passport must remain valid for the entire period covered by the requested visa.
Is Knowledge of Italian Required?
No.
The language requirement depends on the course selected.
Many Italian universities offer degree programs taught entirely in English.
In such cases, applicants may be required to provide proof of English language proficiency rather than Italian proficiency.
Language requirements are established by the educational institution, not by the student visa itself.
What Is Universitaly?
For students planning to enroll in Italian universities, the process generally involves more than simply applying for a visa.
In most cases, applicants must first complete a pre-enrollment procedure through the Universitaly platform, the official online system managed by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) for international university applications.
Once the pre-enrollment process has been completed through the platform, students may proceed with the admission requirements established by their chosen university and subsequently apply for their student visa at the competent Italian Consulate.
Procedures may vary depending on the university, the academic program, and the guidelines issued by the Italian authorities for each academic year. For this reason, prospective students should always verify the specific requirements established by the institution where they intend to study.
Can Students Work in Italy?
Yes.
Holders of a Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio (Student Residence Permit) are allowed to work in Italy within the limits established by Italian law.
Pursuant to Article 14(4) of Presidential Decree (D.P.R.) No. 394/1999, students may work up to 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 1,040 hours per year.
However, the primary purpose of the student's stay in Italy must remain the completion of their academic program.
What Happens After Arriving in Italy?
Obtaining a student visa does not complete the immigration process.
After entering Italy, students must apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio (Student Residence Permit).
The application must be submitted within 8 working days of entering Italy, to the competent Italian authorities.
The Permesso di Soggiorno is the document that legally authorizes the student's stay in Italy for the duration of their studies.
Can You Remain in Italy After Completing Your Studies?
Yes.
Italian law allows the Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio to be converted into other categories of residence permits, including, for example, residence permits for employment, provided that all applicable legal requirements are met.
However, it is important to clarify that this conversion is not automatic.
Eligibility for conversion depends on several factors, including:
- the immigration category requested;
- the type of academic program completed;
- the validity of the Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio;
- compliance with the legal requirements applicable at the time of the application.
Each case must be assessed individually, taking into account the legislation in force and the student's specific circumstances.
For this reason, a student visa does not, by itself, guarantee the right to remain in Italy after graduation. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the legal requirements for the residence permit category they intend to obtain.
Can a Student Visa Lead to Permanent Residence?
A student visa does not automatically lead to permanent residence.
However, the period of lawful residence in Italy may be relevant for future immigration pathways, depending on the type of residence permit obtained after graduation and the total period of lawful residence accumulated in the country.
Why Does Italy Continue to Attract International Students?
Italy is home to some of Europe's oldest and most prestigious universities, offers internationally recognized academic programs, and provides educational costs that are often lower than those of other European study destinations.
In addition, studying in Italy allows students to live legally within the Schengen Area, gain valuable international experience, and build future academic and professional opportunities in the country.
