What Is Universitaly?

For students planning to enroll in Italian universities, the process generally involves more than simply applying for a visa.

In most cases, applicants must first complete a pre-enrollment procedure through the Universitaly platform, the official online system managed by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) for international university applications.

Once the pre-enrollment process has been completed through the platform, students may proceed with the admission requirements established by their chosen university and subsequently apply for their student visa at the competent Italian Consulate.

Procedures may vary depending on the university, the academic program, and the guidelines issued by the Italian authorities for each academic year. For this reason, prospective students should always verify the specific requirements established by the institution where they intend to study.

Can Students Work in Italy?

Yes.

Holders of a Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio (Student Residence Permit) are allowed to work in Italy within the limits established by Italian law.

Pursuant to Article 14(4) of Presidential Decree (D.P.R.) No. 394/1999, students may work up to 20 hours per week, with a maximum of 1,040 hours per year.

However, the primary purpose of the student's stay in Italy must remain the completion of their academic program.

What Happens After Arriving in Italy?

Obtaining a student visa does not complete the immigration process.

After entering Italy, students must apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno per Studio (Student Residence Permit).

The application must be submitted within 8 working days of entering Italy, to the competent Italian authorities.

Can You Remain in Italy After Completing Your Studies?

Yes.

A student visa does not automatically lead to permanent residence.
